Synopsis
Hope is a fairy tale
Doomed is an all-practical effects sci-fi film about finding hope in a world that has given you absolutely no reason to have hope.
An inexplicable three-year winter has brought an entire community to the brink. The food is all but gone. Many have perished in the famine, including the ten-year-old son of Broud and Rachel. The grieving parents struggle to stay out of the downward spiral of depression.
Atlas, their servant, one of many identical Androids, knows more about the situation than his masters could ever know. Unbeknownst to the humans, the Androids are not just servants, they are their protectors. They are sworn to keep the humans hidden from a mysterious threat. When Zeus, the unyielding Android overseer, ignores Atlas' advice and opts to send out a distress call, the mysterious threat threatens to make itself known.
When all of the forces at play come to a head in the thrilling climax, Broud, Rachel and Atlas have to find the strength to believe that they can make it out alive. Can they survive? Or are they all Doomed?
Production
One of the primary goals of Doomed was to shoot an all-practical effects science fiction film. The production largely achieved its goal; however, a few small graphics were generated by computer and, as was anticipated before production began, the film was composited digitally. Despite these very modest compromises, Doomed is a testament to power of models and practical effects. While CGI has its place, Doomed shows that filmmakers do not have to rely on it in order to create an effective science fiction film; even on a modest budget.
Doomed was funded primarily by our gracious backers on Kickstarter. Broken Hill managed to raise $5 000 over the course of our month long Kickstarter campaign and raised another thousand independently, bringing the total budget for Doomed in at around $6 000. The film was shot over the course of six days in February of 2014, right in the middle the harsh Canadian winter. The film was shot in only three different locations (including the green screen studio) on a RED Scarlett camera. Additional footage was captured on Sony, Canon and Black Magic cameras.
In 2015, Doomed was accepted into the Filmmaker Assistance Program (FAP) at the National Filmboard of Canada. The program is designed to assist emerging filmmakers with post-production services. Doomed's ADR was recorded at NFB Montreal and Doomed's sound was mixed in 5.1 surround at the NFB's Colin Low Studio Theatre.
